How to Create a Wellness Ritual That Actually Sticks

Forget complicated routines and the pressure to follow the latest wellness trends. Discover how to make self-care part of the life you're already living.

1. When did self-care become another thing on our to-do list?

Between work deadlines, children navigating school and the responsibilities of caring for ageing parents, it's easy to see why so many people struggle to find time for themselves.

For those in the sandwich generation, balancing the needs of children and ageing parents alongside their own responsibilities can leave very little room for personal wellbeing.

There's certainly no shortage of wellness advice. From meditation and journaling to skincare rituals and cold plunges, we're constantly discovering new ways to look after ourselves. And while many of these practices can be beneficial, not every approach will suit everyone.

The challenge is finding what works for us without turning self-care into another obligation on an already crowded to-do list.

Perhaps the answer isn't finding more time. It's recognising the opportunities that already exist within the time we have.

2. A wellness ritual doesn't need to look like wellness

There's a difference between following a wellness routine and creating a personal ritual.

A routine can become something we feel obliged to complete. A ritual is something we enjoy, appreciate and genuinely look forward to.

For me, one of those moments happens over breakfast. I sit with my coffee, my cat on my lap, and spend some time doing Wordle and Connections. There's nothing particularly elaborate about it, but it's an opportunity to engage my mind and enjoy some uninterrupted time before the day begins.

Walking with my husband in the mornings is another.

Neither requires special equipment, an elaborate routine or a commitment to the latest wellness trend.

The point is that wellness is personal. What works for someone else might not work for you, and that's perfectly fine.

3. Find the opportunities within your existing day

Rather than trying to carve out another half-hour, look at what you're already doing.

There are opportunities to make familiar activities more enjoyable without adding anything significant to your schedule.

For the senses

Scent is an interesting example because it can become part of your surroundings while you're busy doing something else.

Switch on an essential oil diffuser while getting ready in the morning. Choose an uplifting fragrance to accompany your morning routine or a grounding blend for a quieter atmosphere.

You don't need to stop what you're doing to enjoy it.

For your skin

If you already have an evening skincare routine, consider incorporating a gua sha tool.

Instead of rushing through applying your serum, take a few minutes to massage your face. Pay attention to how the stone feels against your skin and enjoy the experience.

What was previously another task before bed might become something you look forward to.

For your mind

Journaling is another opportunity to create a personal ritual.

You don't need to write pages every day. A few sentences over your morning coffee or before bed might be enough.

Some people enjoy reflecting on their day, while others prefer writing down their thoughts or planning for tomorrow.

Find an approach that suits you.

For slowing down

Even something as ordinary as taking a shower can become an opportunity to pause.

Instead of reaching for the same soap without thinking, choose one with a fragrance you genuinely enjoy. Perhaps use botanical bath salts in your evening bath or shower.

Take the time to appreciate the scent, the warmth of the water and the opportunity to switch off.

You're already going to have a shower. Why not make it an experience you enjoy?

4. The missing ingredient: Pay attention

This is perhaps the most important part of creating a wellness ritual.

It's not necessarily about what you're doing. It's about noticing and appreciating the experience.

There's a difference between switching on your diffuser and forgetting about it, and occasionally noticing how lovely your bedroom smells.

Or rushing through your skincare routine versus taking a moment to appreciate how your skin feels after using your gua sha.

The same applies to enjoying your morning coffee, going for a walk or spending time with someone you love.

You don't need to turn every activity into an exercise in mindfulness. But occasionally paying attention to the things that make you feel good can change how you experience an ordinary day.

5. How to make your wellness ritual a habit

Start with something you already enjoy and connect it to an activity that's established in your daily routine.

If you love fragrance, switch on your diffuser while getting dressed. If you enjoy skincare, keep your gua sha beside your evening serum. If journaling appeals to you, leave your journal and pen beside your favourite chair.

Make your chosen ritual easy to repeat.

And don't worry about doing it perfectly. Missing a day doesn't mean you've failed, and there's no requirement to practice every ritual every day.

Consistency develops more naturally when you're doing something you enjoy rather than something you feel obliged to do.

6. Give yourself permission to change

What works for you today might not suit you six months from now.

Our circumstances change, our responsibilities shift and our interests evolve.

Perhaps you once enjoyed an elaborate morning routine but now have a busy household to manage. Or maybe you've discovered that you prefer walking outdoors to sitting quietly and meditating.

There's no reason to continue a ritual simply because it once worked for you.

The purpose of self-care is to support your wellbeing, not create another obligation.

7. Make wellness your own

There's no shortage of advice about what we should be doing to improve our wellbeing.

But perhaps it's time to stop looking for the perfect routine and start paying attention to what makes us feel good.

Find the opportunities within your existing day. Choose activities you genuinely enjoy, appreciate the experience and allow your rituals to evolve as your life changes.

Wellness doesn't have to demand more of your time. Sometimes it's about making more of the time you already have.
